Note* | 22 JUN 1933 | She Ellen “Nellie” Brown was born 26 August 1860 in Northside, Birtley, Durham, England, the daughter of James and Grace Howard Brown. She had four sibling that survived, one brother, John and three sisters; Margaret, Mary Ann and Elizabeth. She immigrated to the United States with her mother, brother John and sisters, Margaret and Mary Ann aboard the ship "Pennsylvania", departing Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland and arriving New York, New York on 1 March 1865. The family lived in Plymouth, Luzern County, Pennsylvania where her father James Brown worked as a coal miner. Nellie married twice. The first time to Samuel Hackett in 1879. Samuel was the brother Susan Hackett Brown, wife of Nellie's brother, John Brown. (Ellen “Nellie” Brown married Samuel Hackett, John Brown married Susan Hackett.) Samuel and Ellen “Nellie” had three children; James William, Mae and Grace “Gay” Hackett in Plymouth, Luzern County, Pennsylvania. The three siblings later took the surname of their step-father George Palmer. In 1885, Ellen “Nellie” Brown Hackett, married George Palmer. The couple and Nellie’s three children by her first marriage moved to Iowa City, Illinois where son Arthur "Art" was born. Nellie and George ran a boarding house for a while in Illinois, then moved to Gillespie, Jefferson Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania where George worked in the coal mines. They had three children in Gillespie, two daughters; Estelle “Stell” and Rondell, and one son Isaac "Ike". on 22 JUN 1933.1 |
